Farm To School Foods

Every year when apple season ends, we hear a sad refrain from our students, "When are we going to get the good apples again?" So each fall we're delighted to offer homegrown Missouri apples from Rasa Orchards in Lexington, Missouri.

But apples are only one example of Opaa's Farm to School effort. Bibb lettuce and tomatoes from Hamra Farms arrives within 24 hours after picking from their hydroponic greenhouses in Bell City and Sikeston. And Fahrmeier Farms, also near Lexington, not only provides fresh tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers for Opaa! schools, but they also partner with Opaa! and the University of Missouri for the Farm Sprouts and Food From the Farm programs. These programs include lessons and activities taught in the classroom, trips to local farms to show students how food grows, and local fruit and vegetable "tastings" in the classroom.

Opaa! is proud of the fact that purchasing local fruits and vegetables provides financial support to growers who operate in the areas we serve. Parents and students can learn which fresh Farm to School items are featured at their school by referring to the monthly menus posted on the school's website.
